Here's Looking at You, Kid

Newly-named 28-year-old Red Sox GM Theo Epstein was interviewed this morning amid a snowy Fenway Park by NBC's Matt Lauer on the "Today" show. Asked if he was feeling pressure in his new post, Epstein said, "A little bit of pressure. It's been a great public reaction here in Boston. I grew up in the city, so I know what people want. The fans only want to win, the media really only wants you to win, and that is what we want too, so in a way, we are all pulling together, and it's a good feeling." Lauer: "You're being called the Ben Affleck of baseball, because you're single and young, and there are bumper stickers I understand in Boston where it says, 'Our General Manager was Student of the Month at Brookline High School'" ("Today," NBC, 11/27).

LL BEANED!

"he had trouble clarifying what his priorities were"

Not a good trait in a GM. "It was because of my daughter. And because I didn't want to be a fool and leave my 3 pitchers. And because the GM of a rival team told me not to go there. And because Tony Soprano sent me messages through my TV..."

Whatever. We'll keep our players, money and prospects and hire a GM with less of a reputation but one who wants to be the man who brought Boston the championship. Enjoy Oakland, your apathetic fans and your tiny budget, Mr. Genius. - The Gray Eagle, SoSH

“The most important thing for me is my wife Tara and my daughter Casey, and to put what I need to put into that franchise -- and what they should expect -- might impact my marriage and my family.
And I can't let that happen.” — Billy Beane
