"They Will Keep the Park Open
and Renovate"
6.13. 3:15pm: Gammons on WEEI's The Big Show with Glenn Ordway, Steve
Buckley, Sean McAdam (rough transcript).
Glenn Ordway: It doesn't look like they're going to build a new
ballpark?
PG: Not a chance, it can't be done financially. The mayor has told
people he is all for closing off and cobble-stoning Yawkey Way and Lansdown
Street. They can put the seats on LF Wall without stanchions on Lansdown
Street. They're going to move the offices across the street, maybe the
Deaconess Medical Bldg. on Van Ness for rent. May use Twins space, Beer Works.
They will keep the park open and renovate.
They're not going to touch the basic inside of ballpark except to renovate.
6,000 club seats to be added and they'll keep putting seats wherever they can.
Buckley: You're still going to have bad seats in 3,4,5,6... Ordway:
They'll change them to face home plate.
Sean: How do they cut back attendance for two years and remain
competitive?
PG: It's going to be tough. Their finances are tenuous. What happens
winter of 2004, Pedro, Nomar, No farm system... we could be looking at team
like Detroit Tigers in a few years. If they're 73-89 one year, it will be
interesting to see how much the revenue drops.
Ordway: Economic climate in this state is in no way in a position to
pull off new stadium. State can't help you out. Real estate costs still too
high.
Sean: Couldn't a land swap be done Peter?
PG: I was told they looked at every possibility and were told it was
impossible.
They have made their decision and this is where they are going with it. I was
asking about behind home plate where I sit... seats are not going to be
changed.
Sean: This seems like a band-aid w/long term questions unaddressed.
PG. Agree, 5-6,000 club seats, 508 year proposition. 600 Club to be new
club seat area.
Buck: Take whole thing out (600Club) and put them there. Put press box
even higher :-)
